poof

poof
‘You pampered pouff’ is said by one man to another in Daniel, by David Thomson. It causes the man so addressed to hit the speaker and become involved in a fight with him. He later discusses the incident with a friend.’ ‘You’re a pouff,” she said to try it out. “You’re a curtain rail, a towel horse - what a marvellous language. You shouldn’t have hit him.” “If that’s what he meant, I wouldn’t have.” “What did he mean?” “A homosexual.”’ This writer appears to associate the slang word with a pouf or pouffe, the item of furniture on which one rests the feet. Others connect it with ‘puff’, as in ‘powder-puff’, but its actual origin is not known.
